THE CULTURAL ROADMAP FOR CITY GIRLS EVERYWHERE

Today’s Nationwide Women’s Strike

June 24, 2024

More than 60 actions, set to take place today, have been listed nationwide on the Women's March map.

Women’s Strike 2024 is called for a nationwide protest today for equal rights, reproductive freedom, and an end to gender-based violence.

Today marks two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, declaring abortion was no longer protected under the Constitution. The decision left pregnant people at the mercy of their state’s laws. In the past two years, 14 states have passed a near-total abortion ban, according to CBS News. Another 11 states have restricted abortions up to 22 weeks, before the fetus is considered viable.

In a post on TikTok, Women’s Strike 2024 called on viewers to be the change as these bans continue to violate human rights.

“[W]e must put an end to the government’s attempts to control our bodies,” the post reads. “We have the agency and responsibility to make a change.”

The post has since garnered over 500,000 views. More than 60 actions, set to take place today, have been listed nationwide on the Women’s March map. If you’re not able to attend an action, organizers ask participants to wear red, stay home from work and school, and not spend any money unless at women-owned businesses. If you have to spend, organizers recommend prioritizing BIPOC-owned businesses as well.

“What we can really understand and measure by Monday, is the strength of the grassroots and how angry people are,”Executive Director Rachel O’Leary Carmona said. “And so I think that we will continue to see these organic, grassroots uprisings all the way until our rights are restored.”

Women’s Strike has also set up a virtual strike, which will take place all day today. Over 3,000 participants are expected to attend.

“The themes that we see across the board is that we are striking, we are rallying, we are marching for our freedoms, for our families and for our future. And that is pretty universal across the board,” said Carmona.

Organizers hope the widespread strikes and actions will underscore the importance of the 2024 election, as well as the power of women’s voices.
