Thora Birch got unexpectedly candid about her sexuality this week, coming out as bisexual during a red carpet interview.

The Ghost World star shared her truth with Us Weekly during the 35th-anniversary celebration of the legendary West Hollywood gay bar The Abbey on Wednesday night, explaining why attending was important to her.

“As a hometown girl, I’m always here to show my support for the community, which shaped so much of who I am, and my identity, as well, you know, um,” said, “as being a bi person.”

Moving on quickly from the casual revelation, she added, “I don’t want to get too political, but find your community where you can, and stand with them, and stick with them, and share that love that you share together, and reach it toward others. And that’s the only way we’re going to get through all this madness, is by just embracing one another.”

Fans were supportive of the news, with one X account joking, “This feels like a fork found in kitchen situation, but im happy for her.”

Despite not coming out publicly until age 44, Birch spent her childhood making movies like Hocus Pocus and Now and Then that are still fondly embraced by the queer community to this day. Her most recent credit is for Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut, The Chronology of Water. She’s also been married to talent manager Michael Benton Adler, who accompanied her at The Abbey, since 2018.

“I’m in a good place in my life,” she told The Independent earlier this year. “I’m happy. I’ll put it that way. And that’s a great accomplishment, I think.”

Birch was one of many celebrities in attendance for The Abbey’s anniversary party. The event featured a star-studded guest list across the sexuality spectrum, including Megan Stalter, Cara Delevingne, Gabrielle Union, Melanie C, RuPaul, Adam Lambert, Jodie Sweetin, Chris Colfer, and more.
