The Very Best of NYC Film/TV (March 2010)

The Wizard of Oz, Dancing Across Borders and More!

Victor Fleming Film Festival begins Mar. 5 at the Film Forum. This 22 film festival spotlights the career of Hollywood director best known for helming both The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind within the same year. Highlights of the festival include The Farmer Takes A Wife starring Henry Fonda and Janet Gaynor; Tortilla Flat with Spencer Tracy and Hedy Lamarr; Joan of Arc with Ingrid Bergman and more.

Anne Bass’ Dancing Across Borders comes to a theater near you on Mar. 26. The film chronicles the intimate and triumphant story of Sokvannara Sar, who was discovered by Bass on a trip to Angkor Wat Cambodia and brought to the ballet stage in America. What unfolds is a tentative negotiation between Sy and the world of American ballet and culture—from the serene countryside of Southeast Asia to the halls of the School of the American Ballet, to the stage of the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. The film follows Sy’s unusual development as a dancer and offers a remarkable behind-the-scenes look into the world of American ballet.
