The Very Best of NYC Comedy/Variety

Dykes on Mics, Homo Comicus, Marga Gomez and more

July 6 at the Gotham Comedy club, revel in the latest installment of Homo Comicus: Sizzlin’ Summer Stand-up. It’s summertime, and the laughin’ is easy—with host Bob Montgomery and a brilliant bouquet of hilarious LGBT comics in riotous bloom, including Jason Stuart, Harmonica Sunbeam, Emma Willmann and more.

Nurse your post-Fourth of July hangover with Dykes on Mics, a July 6 showcase at RF Lounge starring NYC’s funniest lesbian and LGBT-friendly comedians and performers. The delightful Amy Beckerman, a past honoree among GO’s “100 Women We Love,” is the mistress of ceremonies. Catch certified funny girls Cara Kilduff (as seen on Here TV’s Hot Gay Comics), Jessica Halem (a fixture on LOGO) and many more.

Marga Gomez spills the beans in her ninth solo show, Not Getting Any Younger, a comedy about lies, vanity and the good old days. Playing July 29–30 at Dixon Place, Marga’s coming-of-age story begins in a dairy cow’s boudoir in the Bronx and leads to a murder in a ‘Forever 21’ department store. Lauded for her honesty as an out gay comedian before it was safe, Gomez has been a master of deception in other ways. Now the cagey monologist unburdens herself and brings her riskiest revelation to the stage.

Is it hot in here, or is it just us? August 5 will be steamy in more ways than one when Butch Burlesque: An Evening of Swagger touches down at Dixon Place. Co-curated and emceed by Victoria Libertore and Lea Robinson, the lineup ranges from seasoned, salt-and-pepper performers to burlesque ‘virgins’ debuting their new wares. Don’t miss the kind of radical raunch and sexy swagger only Dixon Place can offer.

Also at Dixon Place, Burlesque With Essence Revealed And Friends on July 2 serves up a sensual and entertaining night of performance and storytelling through the scintillating art of burlesque. Performers include Essence Revealed, Syd London (one of GO’s “100 Women We Love”), Miss SoCo from Brown Girls Burlesque and more, plus surprises! Like any burlesque performer worth her pasties, we can’t give too much away.
