NewFest, Rooftop Films 2012 Summer Series, Sparkle, The Real L Word

Don’t miss the 24th annual NewFest, New York’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Film Festival running Jul 27-31 at Manhattan’s film mecca, the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater. The festival offers a lineup of 12 narrative features, four documentaries, 18 shorts and two panel discussions including Marialy Rivas’ acclaimed Chilean film Young & Wild (World Cinema Screenwriting Award, Sundance 2012). Based on the life of co-screenwriter Camila Gutiérrez, the film is a sexually-charged, stunning and energetic look at family and youth culture in contemporary Chile. Also screening is Cloudburst, Kiss Me and I Am a Woman Now.

Rooftop Films 2012 Summer Series presents a full line-up of astonishing short films, now through Aug 18 at unique outdoor venues in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx . The films come from around the world—offbeat and hilarious comedies, intimate and intense dramas, powerful and personal documentaries—which reflect Rooftop’s focus on exciting, innovative, independent cinema. Most events include live music, filmmaker Q&As, special appearances by the films’ casts and subjects, and after-parties with complimentary drinks. This year’s festival highlights include the Sundance Film Festival shorts, Gayby, Is it Love?, and Coming Home, plus the Animation Block Party.

Jordin Sparks and the late Whitney Houston star in Sparkle, opening in theaters nationwide Aug 17. The film tells the story of a musical prodigy, Sparkle (Sparks) who struggles to become a star while overcoming issues that are tearing her family apart. From an affluent Detroit area and daughter to a single mother (Houston), she tries to balance a new romance while dealing with the unexpected challenges her new life will bring as she and her two sisters strive to become a dynamic singing group during the Motown era.

The Real L Word returns to Showtime for a third season with some brand new faces Jul 12. New mainstays include Sara and Lauren in Los Angeles and Kiyomi, Somer, and Amanda, the trifecta representing the show’s new expansion into New York City. Past cast members Whitney, Romi and married couple Cori and Kacy will also return. Smart, gorgeous and wildly successful, this fascinating group of L.A. and NYC ladies is ready to change the scene with their captivating stories and sizzling drama. From love and lust to family and career, these women know what they want and just how to get it.
