Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Lesbians in Space Novel Gets an Adaptation Update
The film is expected to begin production later this year.
As we continue to await news on The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, another adaptation of a sapphic Taylor Jenkins Reid novel just got an update.
Independent studio Black Bear has acquired the worldwide rights for Atmosphere, Reid’s most recent novel, with plans to release the film theatrically in the U.S.
Atmosphere is a period piece set in 1980s Houston, Texas, following an astrophysicist who joins NASA’s first class of female space shuttle scientists and falls in love with another woman in the program.
Casting for the film hasn’t been announced yet, but Captain Marvel filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck boarded the project from Laika Studios last May.
While the acquisition of distribution rights may not seem like a huge update on the surface, it does signify two things: the film is still moving forward, and it’s specifically headed for a theatrical release. The other adaptations of Reid’s novels that are currently in development are all set up at streamers, as was Daisy Jones & the Six. In theory, Atmosphere will therefore mark the second of Reid’s novels to receive theatrical distribution, following 2023’s One True Loves.

While people are still chomping at the bit for news about Evelyn Hugo, hearing that Atmosphere is on the way definitely has fans of Reid’s work hyped.
Atmosphere is expected to begin production next month in Atlanta, Georgia.
