Welcome to Seven Minutes in Heaven, GO Magazine’s interview series that profiles a different queer babe each day, by asking them seven unique (and sometimes random) questions. Get to know the thoughts, feelings, and opinions of the groundbreaking, fierce forces-of-nature in the queer community.
You ever hear a song that is catchy AF and it bops in your head all day? Sure you have. But has it happened with a ~lesbian song~ by a ~lesbian artist~? Anyone that knows me knows I’m desperate for a lesbian pop star so you can imagine my delight when I discovered SUMif. She is queer AF and fierce AF. AND a new song of hers just dropped today — give it a listen:
Sorry to get you all lit on a Wednesday afternoon (maybe you can head to Misster at The Woods later to dance?) Now that you have heard her new song, get to know the powerhouse babe behind the beat, SUMif.
GO Magazine: Who are you and what do you do?
SUMif: I’m Steph aka SUMif – I make electro-pop music in San Francisco.
GO: What is the driving force behind your music?
S: My favorite feeling is being at a show, dancing with my friends, so my motivation to start this project was the desire give that experience back to people. I want my music to make you move, regardless of whether you’re in your desk chair at work or at a music festival.
GO: Who are your biggest queer lady role models?
S: Frida Kahlo — she was openly queer in a not so forgiving time and in spite of unspeakable hardship and lifelong challenges, she remained resilient and lived life authentically, all while producing incredible art. I wear my Frida socks on show days for good luck.
GO: Where do you go for inspiration when you’re feeling discouraged or depleted?
S: I go on Spotify and listen to tracks in my “inspo” playlist — recently a lot of Tove Lo, MØ, Charli XCX and Maggie Rogers… I’m inspired by badass women who write killer pop songs with infectious on-stage presence.
GO: Describe your style in three words.
S: Vibrant, energetic, flannel femme.
GO: Tell us about what we can expect from you coming soon!
S: Love Shop (out today) is the first single off my sophomore EP — I’ll be releasing singles each month for the next few months leading up to the release of the EP. Check out my live show in NYC and SF in late March/early April.
GO: How can people find you?
S: Spotify, Facebook, Instagram, Soundcloud, or my website.
