Move over, Heated Rivalry! The WNBA is coming to play.
A new queer romcom set in the world of women’s basketball is in the works with involvement from professional ballers Gabby Williams, Theresa Plaisance, and Syd Colson. Courtside will center around an “injury-plagued women’s basketball superstar whose championship ambitions are upended when she falls for her teammate,” according to an exclusive from Deadline.
The film is set at Run-A-Muck, a media company founded by Jennifer Beals, The L Word co-creator Ilene Chaiken, and Pamela Drucker Mann. It will be directed by Carly Usdin from a script by Brittani Nichols.
Notably, Usdin previously wrote, directed, and produced The Syd + TP Show, a buddy comedy about Colson and Plaisance trying to become the most famous basketball players in the world. Colson and Plaisance also host the weekly podcast, Unsupervised.
“I don’t think I’ve ever said yes to an opportunity faster than I did for Courtside,” Colson told Deadline. “I respect Carly and Brittani’s sense of humor so much and being involved with this in any capacity sounded amazing! I’m elated to see a new generation of women’s sports films. I can already feel how transformative this movie will be in terms of representation on screen for minorities, queer people, and women’s basketball players and fans alike.”
Sports romcoms are quickly becoming all the rage across various mediums, and for once, queer stories aren’t being left behind. A few months after Heated Rivalry kicked off a fan frenzy, Amazon announced that they were developing Cleat Cute, a series centered around the budding romance between two professional women’s soccer players, based on the book of the same name.
Although the details for Courtside remain sparse for now, the rising interest in the WNBA, combined with the desire for queer romcoms, already has people seated and ready for this movie to eventually hit our screens.
