Proud Boys Unsuccessful In Bringing Down Drag Queen Story Hour

Sashay Away, Proud Boys!

Dozens of people protested a Drag Queen Story Hour event in NYC on Sunday, and things got ugly. One man was arrested and another was left bloodied (the exact cause of injury is currently unclear). Some of the protesters were members of the far-right extremist group, The Proud Boys.

The protesters gathered in the West Village outside the LGBTQ Community Center. Inside, New York Attorney General Letitia James was hosting a Drag Story Hour event, where Drag Queens read children’s books to families and children.

According to NBC, one of the protesters, Robert Porco, 53, of Fishkill, New York, “was arrested and was charged with Assault,” after “he approached a victim and struck him in the face.” The victim suffered a “physical injury to his face” and “swelling to his nose” but was not hospitalized.

In a video posted on Twitter, a different protester, who social media has identified as a Proud Boy, can be seen walking away from outside the LGBTQ Community Center with blood on his face.

“I came here to help, not get the s*** beat out of me,” he said in the video, with a fellow protester in a Proud Boys sweatshirt by his side.

Counterprotesters can be heard in the background of the video chanting, “Go back to Long Island” and “F*** the Proud Boys.”

Representatives for James and Drag Story Hour’s New York City chapter did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

James said in a statement Sunday that “hate has no home in New York, and I will always fight to ensure our LGBTQ+ siblings’ rights are upheld and defended.”
