One Millions Moms is calling for the removal of a mattress commercial which the group claims is “attempting to normalize sin” by featuring same-sex couples.
The commercial for Avocado Mattress, a sustainable mattress company, features a montage of both same and opposite-sex couples and families cuddling in bed as a voice over says, “At Avocado, we believe love is pure, honest, committed, and above all, natural.”
The voice over continues, referring to the “natural, organic materials” the company uses in its products. The accompanying image on screen shows two women holding hands in bed while they watch a portable device. The image then shifts to another, this one showing two men lying in bed together, smiling.
In a statement made on its website, One Million Moms claims that the commercial “not only promotes same sex relationships by including a lesbian couple and a homosexual couple who are both very much together and cuddling, but also glamorizes it by being misleading.”
The group also claims in the statement that “this advertisement is pushing the LGBTQ agenda especially when children are likely to be watching television.” The statement is accompanied by a petition demanding that Avocado Mattress “stick to promoting your product, without making political and social statements.”
So far, the petition has received over 13,200 signatures. Yahoo News reports that the Avocado Mattress ad has been viewed over 200,000 times.
One Million Moms is an offshoot of the American Family Association, a group which proclaims to promote traditional values and opposes LGBTQ+ rights. It is labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
