NY NIGHTLIFE: SCENE

The hottest clubs, coolest bars, and everything in between. For all dates, times and locations, see the nightlife listings.

THE STONEWALL INN

There’s a nightlife Renaissance occuring in the West Village, and once again, it’s taking place at The Stonewall Inn—the historic bar where the first gay liberation riots in 1969 paved the way for gay life as we know it. The bar, which re-opened after extensive renovations early last year, is now home to several nights that re-establish this site as a traditionally mixed gay-and-lesbian and trans-friendly space.

Stonewall 69, the happening, mixed Thursday night party hosted by one of Stonewall’s investors, Stacy Lentz, and with music by DJ Stacy, is drawing women in record numbers to what, over the years following the Stonewall riots, came to be known as a seedy bar for men. Today, the beautiful, soon-to-be-two-level space is adorned with dark wood paneling, mirrors and leather banquettes. When the upstairs opens this month, partiers will be entertained in more ways than one—a full stage will play host to exciting performers of all genres.

One of the hottest parties to hit New York in recent times, Victoria, plans to take full advantage of the new performance area. Second Saturdays of every month, this progressive drag party attracts a mixed gay-lesbian-straight-trans crowd with their fun and sexy shows and anything goes vibe. This month, on Feb 9, they’ll be celebrating their favorite TV show, The Golden Girls, with a show by an original faux-drag Golden Girls Troupe.

Kurt Kelly, one of the club’s owners, says, “This is what The Stonewall Inn was all about back in 1969. It was a mixed club where everyone felt welcome. That’s what we want to bring back to the West Village.” Thankfully, fun and fabulous parties like Stonewall 69 and Victoria are doing just that.
