Music: Revolutions

There is no official LGBT American Idol, but if you’re looking for a solid sampling of emerging artists from the community, your best bet is a new compilation CD called Revolutions. Put out by TWIST, a joint venture between Sony Music Label Group/Columbia Records and Logo network founder Matt Farber’s WIlderness Media & Entertainment, the CD features the work of 11 promising singers representing all genres. The Gossip’s “Standing in the Way of Control” kicks off the album with a lot of bass and a sassy front singer—Beth Ditto—whose voice resembles that of Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Next to play are “Come Over Here” from Sarah Bettens and “Jessy” by Ivri Lider. The duo of slow songs brings down the album’s pace and makes you wish for a rainy day to crawl under your bed covers. “Forgiveness” by Jonathan Mendelsohn & Wamdue Project wakes you back up with its steady beats and airy vocals, only to be followed by the sultry “Magic Tree” by Kirsten Price. “Love You Better” by God-Des and She, and “Flow With My Soul” by Adam Joseph both cleverly mix up soul and hip-hop. The only hint of country we get on the album comes from Dylan Rice with “The Lie.” Tangela Bell’s powerful vocals mesh well with the deep hip-hop beats in her song “Addiction.” Jesse O’s “I Think I’m Falling In Love” is a solid slowjam with a comforting vibe. And to cap the compilation is “I Should Go” by Levi Kreis, an emotional piano solo accompanied by sensitive lyrics. The album hits stores May 15.
