On Sunday night, the silver screen’s most celebrated luminaries gathered at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood for the 89th annual Academy Awards ceremony. Many may best remember 2017’s Oscars for the unprecedented snafu that stole some of the thunder from “Moonlight“‘s historic Best Picture score (the winner was initially announced as “La La Land” by presenter Faye Dunaway, but moments later it was revealed that the wrong envelope had been handed over, and “Moonlight” had actually won). Nonetheless, “Moonlight”‘s earning of the Best Picture award was historic, indeed: The coming of age story of a gay Black man took home the star-studded evening’s coveted top prize, becoming the first movie with an LGBTQ plotline ever to do so. Mahershala Ali also won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film (the first Muslim actor to ever win in that category), and the movie additionally won Best Writing – Adapted Screenplay.

In other good Oscar-related news, Viola Davis made history on Sunday night after winning the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in “Fences.” The gain made Davis the first black actor to win an Oscar, Tony, and Emmy for acting—and now, she’s only one Grammy away from an EGOT.
