Maj. Margaret Witt Announces Retirement

Major Margaret Witt announced that she has reached a settlement with the military and will retire with full benefits rather than return to duty as planned

Major Margaret Witt, the flight nurse who won reinstatement to the Air Force Reserve in a landmark federal court case challenging her discharge under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” on Tuesday announced she will retire rather than return to duty.

Witt, 47, reached a settlement with the Air Force under which she will receive full retirement benefits in exchange for the government abandoning its appeal of her reinstatement and clearing her service record of the dishonorable discharge.

Witt had previously stated she would return to duty in the wake of her legal triumph, but asserted on Tuesday that she now believes retiring is the best decision for her and her family.
