While we were waiting for Lena Waithe and her longtime fiancé Alana Mayo to have a big romantic lesbian wedding, the couple sneakily got married in secret. Lena Waithe casually revealed the news on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Friday night.
“We snuck and did it, you know,” Waithe told guest host John Legend. “We didn’t make any announcements.”
“We went to San Francisco. We went to the courthouse. Got married right in front of Harvey Milk’s bust. It was her idea, as all good things are. And she was just driving and she saw the courthouse and she said, ‘We should get married there.’ And I said, ‘Cool, I’m down.'”
The courthouse in San Francisco is a significant place for the LGBTQ community. It’s where the very first legal same-sex wedding was officiated in 2004.
“It was a humbling day, you know, to marry someone so amazing,” Waithe said. “But also to really appreciate all the work that so many people have put in for us to be able to do that.”
The Emmy Award winner and her partner reportedly dated for three years before getting engaged in 2017. Their secret courthouse wedding doesn’t completely come as a surprise. On an episode of Netflix’s “Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner,” Waithe admitted that she used to want a huge wedding, but after becoming a star, not so much.
“For a long time, I thought I wanted a big, flashy wedding,” she told host David Chang. “But then my life kinda got big and flashy. And we don’t want that to be another produced day. So I think for us, we want it to be intimate, and quiet, and just she and I at a courthouse.”
