Hannah Einbinder, Susan Sarandon and Others Detained by NYPD at Benjamin Netanyahu UN Protest

Protestors created a sit-in blockade outside of the UN to protest the Israeli Prime Minister’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly this afternoon.

Over 400 protestors gathered outside of the United Nations in an anti-war sit-in protest during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech. Hannah Einbinder, Susan Sarandon, Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, Elliot Page, Chelsea Manning, Caleb Hearon and others were among the protestors—Einbinder, Sarandon and Hearon later seen being cuffed with zip-ties and detained by NYPD officers. It is not yet clear if protestors were arrested or simply detained.

Organized by groups Jewish Voice for Peace – New York City, Urgence Palestine, NYC Palestinian Youth Movement, NY Indivisible and Global Samud US, the protest occurred outside of the United Nations at Netanyahu was set to address the General Assembly of the United Nations.

“We are here to protest to presence of Benjamin Netanyahu who is an architect of genocide supported by funding from the United States of America. This is an American-Israeli genocide against Palestinians. We are saying no to wars on Iran and in Lebanon and we are saying no to the genocide in Palestine,” Einbinder said while at the protest.

New York politician Chi Ossé and Congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier were also seen among those detained by the NYPD.

Inside the UN, delegates were seen walking out en masse as Netanyahu began his speech saying, “If there are any other moral cowards who haven’t yet left this hall, please do so now.” Netanyahu went on to criticize New York’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of antisemitism saying, “Shame on you for inverting victim and aggressor. Shame on you for spitting in the face of truth, Mr. Mamdani. Since you were elected mayor of this city, many Jews no longer feel safe in New York. They tell me this isn’t the city we remember.”

There has been no update regarding the status of those detained by the NYPD.
