Hannah Einbinder Supports Mark Ruffalo After He Received “Ludicrous” Allegations of Antisemitism

Hannah Einbinder took to social media on Monday night to share her support for Mark Ruffalo after he was accused of antisemitism by Paramount. The allegations came after Ruffalo took to his own social media to highlight the Ellison family’s connection to the Israeli state and warn against Paramount’s upcoming merger with Warner Bros.

Last Friday, Ruffalo shared a video on Instagram of Paramount board member Safra Catz describing the “really profoundly scary technologies” that Oracle used to help the Israeli military after October 7, 2023. The tech company was founded by Larry Ellison, the father of Paramount CEO David Ellison. Ruffalo called Ellison a “classic oligarch” from one of the biggest tech companies in the world. He described Oracle as powering some of the most destructive and inhuman forces in the world. He then described the ways in which the merger would consolidate media power and effectively destroy the film industry. “Really profoundly scary people,” Ruffalo’s statement ended.

Paramount responded in a statement writing, “We are, as always, troubled when antisemitic tropes are invoked in purported service of a business dispute…Words like ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid,’ applied to a corporate transaction, aren’t just wrong — they’re a bridge too far, and they cheapen the very real suffering those words are meant to describe. This doesn’t deserve a response in kind — and to be clear, we don’t tolerate prejudice of any kind, against anyone.”

Following Paramount’s response, Ruffalo wrote on X, “The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel.” He continued, “Scrutinizing the Ellisons, including Oracle’s business built on data, surveillance technology and government contracts, and the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families, is fair and necessary.”

Hacks star and outspoken Jewish activist Hannah Einbinder backed Ruffalo on her own Instagram, writing, “I’m so grateful that Mark Ruffalo drew a connection between the Ellisons providing military technology to Israel during a genocide and their unprecedented media takeover — and pointed out that this is a dangerous consolidation of power that could ultimately be used against us.” She continued, “The idea that he only said these things because the Ellisons are Jewish is LUDICROUS.”

“And I’ll say it till I’m blue in the face: every time zionists equate criticism of Israel, its genocide, or anyone who supports it to antisemitism, they rob the word of all of its meaning. For those of us who ACTUALLY care about jewish safety, we want that word to mean something so that when jews are actually in danger it’s taken seriously,” she wrote.

“All of us artists could stand to be more like Mark, willing to speak out for oppressed people everywhere, even when powerful people try to bully us into silence,” she continued. “Visibility is responsibility. Those of us with a platform need to use our voices before speaking out is outlawed altogether.”
