USA Women’s Rugby Makes History By Winning Bronze
Yesterday, the USA Rugby team, led by Ilona Maher, won the bronze medal match against Australia in the last seconds of the game. If you’re not familiar with rugby, the version played in the Olympics is called Rugby Sevens, which means there are only seven players on each team. The game itself is split into two 7-minute halves, so every second truly counts. Aside from the chill-inducing finish, this win is especially monumental because it marks the first time that USA Rugby has ever won a medal at the Olympics. As for the rest of the standings, New Zealand won gold and Canada won silver.
USA Women’s Gymnastics Gets The Gold
After having to drop out of the last Olympics, Simone Biles returned to the USA Gymnastics team alongside Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, and Hezlety Rivera this year to participate in the Artistic Team All-Around event. The team nailed their floor routines, wowed on the beam, stunned on the uneven bars, and flew high on the vault. In the end, USA took home the gold, and Simone Biles and Suni Lee were immediately planned out which TikToks they wanted to make.
South Korean Marksman Kim Ye-ji Captures The Internet’s Attention
Shooting isn’t necessarily the most stimulating sport — that is, unless there is an ice-cold competitor with the swag of 1,000 Shanes. Here, Marksman Kim Ye-ji is taking her silver medal-winning shot with one hand in her pocket:
With all the attention swirling around her, a clip of Ye-ji breaking the world record in May resurfaced, where she maintains the most stoic, John Wick level of chill despite the fact that she just became the best in the world.
In her event, she placed second only to her teammate, Oh Ye Jin, who sported a pink gun with a pink heart.
USA Featherweight Alyssa Mendoza Clinches Opener
The youngest member of Team USA boxing, Alyssa Mendoza, defeated Tajikistan’s Mijgona Samadova to move on to the next round. The 20-year-old Idaho native was energized by the crowd as they all chanted “U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!”, finally beating her opponent after 3 grueling rounds in a 3-2 split decision.
Katie Ledecky Blows Her Competitors Out Of The Water, Finishes About 18 Seconds Ahead of Nearest Competitor
We all know Katie Ledecky is literally superhuman, and she reminded us of that fact after finishing about 18 seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer. This race was the 1500 m, which is almost a mile if you’re doing the math. Despite the distance, Ledecky still managed to maintain a 25-meter lead, essentially getting the pool all to herself.
This was just the qualifying heat! Lightwork for Ledecky! Can’t wait to see what else she can do for the rest of the games.
Coco Gauff Eliminated in Singles, Advances in Mixed Doubles
Team USA’s Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz are moving on to the next round in Mixed Doubles tennis. Coco Gauff suffered a devastating loss on Monday, after arguing with a ref who made a call that potentially lost her the match. However, she still has a shot at gold with Fritz by her side.
