‘Gayotic’ Might Be Ending, But Muna Is Just Getting Started

Buckle up, Muna stans.

Check in on your Muna-loving friends today as they are probably mourning the death of the band’s iconic podcast Gayotic. The queer band announced via Instagram that the most recent episode, starring queer comedian Caleb Hearon, is “the last episode of [G]ayotic (for now).”

Band member Katie Gavin later reposted the clip writing, “[G]oodbye [G]ayotic until after mun4 … it’s time to lock in.”

Fans took to social media to share their devastation over the end of the podcast which started back in 2021 while the band worked on their previous record. With this pause, fans fear Muna will join the ranks of boygenius and One Direction with their never-ending, seemingly infinite hiatuses.

But fear not, you weary Muna stan. When one door closes, another one opens. With the death of the podcast comes the birth of Muna’s fourth record. Fans have been anxiously waiting for the band’s next release following the 2022 album Muna. As podcast guest Hearon jokes, “It’s always ‘I Know a Place’ with Muna and the place is never the studio.” But it is because of their re-entry into the music studio that the podcast must come to a close. “This is the last episode of this season of Gayotic. We are going on a hiatus because we need to get back to work. We can no longer just talk the talk, we actually have to walk the walk,” said band member Naomi McPherson on the episode.

While not much was revealed about what to expect from the new record, the band confirmed that they have a few really good songs and explained in the vaguest of ways that they’re “going back to certain things and moving away from other things.” Fans have been quick to look on the bright side of the podcast’s passing and embrace the fact that new Muna music is coming (finally).

Fans are also celebrating that Caleb Hearon was the final guest on the show. Hearon, who hosts his own hilarious podcast So True, has become a favorite in the Muna fandom and has appeared on both the podcast and the live show. The top comment under the YouTube episode even reads, “Giving a dog (us) chocolate (caleb) before putting it down (leaving us).”

Gayotic has hosted a number of queer icons such as Phoebe Bridgers, Bowen Yang, Tegan and Sara, and Trixie Mattel. One can only hope that if the podcast is ever revived, it will continue to be a space where these icons can bear witness to the gay chaos that is Muna.
