Queer excellence was shining bright during the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.
Emilia Pérez, a musical-crime-dramedy film following a trans cartel leader, gained momentum for its originality and secured the most Golden Globe nominations of the year. The movie won four major accolades Sunday night, including Best Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy.
The momentous win was accepted by lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón, a 52-year-old trans woman, who dedicated the win to the queer community.
“The light always wins over darkness,” Gascón tearfully remarked. “You can put us in jail. You can beat us up. But you can never take away our soul or our resistance or our identity. I want to say to you, raise your voice and say that I won, I am who I am, not who you want [me to be].”
The film was also awarded Best Motion Picture- Non-English Language, Best Original Song, and Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.

In other cinematic wins, Wicked was recognized for its box office achievement. Last week the film became the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation of all time, surpassing Grease and Mamma Mia!
We will see what records will be broken this November, when Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo return to the big screen in Wicked: For Good.
In TV land, Hacks won Best Television Series- Musical or Comedy, and Baby Reindeer took home the award for Best Television Limited Series.
Jodie Foster was awarded Best Female Actor in a Limited Series or Anthology Series for her role in True Detective: Night Country. The 62-year-old actress is definitely in her golden age! She also accepted her first-ever Emmy Award last September.
“I’m excited about what’s left of my life and who I’ve become that I can bring to the table,” Foster told reporters. “So for me, this is the most contented moment in my career, and I never would’ve known that. I just never would’ve known that. But something happened the day I turned 60.”

Jessica Gunning, who came out as gay last year, took the stage in a blue velvet dress to accept the award for Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Baby Reindeer. This marked Gunning’s first Golden Globe award, and she expressed her gratitude to the series.
“I cannot believe any of this has happened to me,” she said. “Baby Reindeer has changed my life in ways I can’t even explain, so thank you for everything. I can’t believe this is happening to me, and I know that 8-year-old me wouldn’t either.”
We have to take a moment to appreciate the incredible suits worn by musical besties Brandi Carlile and Elton John, who graced the stage to present the award for Best Score in a Motion Picture. No one can rock a structured blazer and tousled hair like these two!
Congratulations to all the fantastic winners!
