Two couples—one lesbian, one gay—on Monday started their own “mile high club” when they married 35,000 feet up aboard a Scandinavian Airlines flight to New York from Stockholm.
The couples were winners of the company’s “Love is in the Air” marketing campaign, which was sponsored by the International Gay Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA). Their nuptials were performed within the first 20 minutes of the flight, while still in Swedish airspace. Sweden passed a law allowing marriage for same-sex couples in 2009.
The dual weddings are believed to be the first legal gay marriages performed aboard a commercial airline.
