The Very Best of NYC Theater

The Tower, Ruthless, Under the Radar Festival and much more

Who doesn’t love a theatre piece based on a chilling true story? The Tower by AntiMatter Collective, running thru Dec 19, is a hallucinogenic journey into the history and mythology of the Donner Party, a group of snowed-in pioneers who tried to migrate to California. Stranded in the mountains, they notoriously resorted to cannibalism to survive the brutal winter of 1846-47. Using historical narrative, psychedelic imagery, contemporary dance and gory effects, this performance merges the past and future in particularly inventive ways.

Hir at Playwrights Horizon’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater is a smash hit (and for good reason), which you should run, not walk, to see. In this sly, subversive, family comedy—with a brilliantly written and acted transgender character—annihilating the past doesn’t always free you from it. Written by Taylor Mac and directed by Niegel Smith, Hir runs thru Jan 3.

Touted as “the stage mother of all musicals” the tagline of Ruthless! The Musical is “some kids will do anything to be a star…anything!” Sounds deliciously campy, and we absolutely love this Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award winner, now starring Kim Maresca, Andrea McCullough, Jennifer Diamond, Rita McKenzie, Tori Murray, Paul Pecorino and Amie Bermowitz. See it at St. Luke’s Theatre.

We always look forward to the Under the Radar Festival at the Public Theater. For the past 12 years, this dynamic festival within a festival has developed into a highlight of the NYC theater season, providing a high-visibility platform for a diverse group of artists who are redefining the genre. This year Under the Radar runs from Jan 6 thru Jan 17. Check publictheater.org for a list of times and performances.

Yes, there’s a musical about Alexander Hamilton, the guy on the $10 bill…and it’s worth at least 100 of those. The tickets are less than that, we hope, but it’s now the hottest ticket in town! Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also wrote the script, stars as Hamilton in this critically acclaimed Broadway production at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Be transported to Old World Europe this holiday season! Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts is teaming up with producer Anton Krilloff to present The Snow Maiden, a magical Russian Christmas version of the Cinderella story. The performance is in Russian
with English subtitles.

Sanctuary the Play is a unique live theatre experience, a powerful one-woman show about the horrors of war, portrayed through three main female characters, each on a quest for her own sanctuary. You can catch it at Theatre Row’s Lion Theatre thru Jan 23.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is still playing in an open run at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. This smash hit, not-to-be-missed production tells the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music; she also wrote the soundtrack to a generation. Now starring Chilina Kennedy in the lead role.
