WNBA superstar Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle are officially parents to a their first child together: a baby boy named Bash.
Brittney Griner shared the exciting news on Friday while speaking on CBS Sports’ We Need to Talk, an all women’s sports show. She revealed the family welcomed Bash on Monday, July 8, and that she prefers to be called ‘pops’ instead of ‘mom.’
“You’re about to be a mom!” CBS news anchor Terrika Foster-Brasby excitedly brought up during the interview.
“Pops! Pops!” the two-time Olympic gold medalist quickly corrected.
The couple announced they were pregnant on Instagram back in April, sharing a photo of the ultrasound with the hashtag “#BabyGrinerComingSoon”.
“I’m super excited,” she told Foster-Brasby. “Well, I mean I guess I’ll just drop it… he’s here. 7/8/24. Seven pounds eight ounces.”
“That is my man. He is amazing,” Griner continued. “They say as soon as you see them, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window. That’s literally what happened.”
The birth comes as Griner is set to head overseas to Paris to compete in the summer Olympics, representing Team USA for the third time. She competed in 2016 and 2020.
“It kind of sucks because I have to leave,” she said. “But at the same time, he will understand.”
Not only will this year mark Griner’s first Olympic competition as a new parent, it will also be her first year since returning to the U.S. after her nine month detention in Russia. In a recent interview with AP, she said this year means more to her than ever before.
“It means everything to me honestly,” Griner said. “For me to now have the honor to wear it again and potentially win gold is icing on the cake for everything.”
As for her time away from Bash, Griner says her wife Cherelle will keep her up-to-date with lots of photos.
“My whole phone has turned into him now,” she smiled.
