Complications from their broken relationship allegedly led Florida resident and prominent blogger Carol Anne Burger to stab her wife 222 times with a Phillips-head screwdriver on Oct 22 before shooting herself the next day as police closed in.
According to investigators, Burger attempted to hide the murder by fabricating a crime scene. She abandoned the bloodied body of Jessica Kalish in her BMW sedan about two miles from their home in Boynton Beach in Palm Beach County. She then planted her wife’s wallet and keys in a different location.
When a man phoned Burger on Oct 23 to say he had found the wallet and keys, Burger reported Kalish missing. She later shot herself to death, without leaving a suicide note.
According to the Palm Beach Post, authorities saw stab wounds clustered around the back of Kalish’s head and across her back, arms and face. Most were between an inch and an inch-and-a-half deep, with a blow to the neck likely being the direct cause of death.
Burger, 57, a freelance election reporter for the top-tier Huffington Post blog, and Kalish, 56, the communications director for a spyware company, lived together as roommates under strained circumstances. Though married in Massachusetts in 2005, their relationship had ended over a year ago, and Kalish had been seeing another woman.
Burger reportedly told friends and family she had been depressed in the days leading up to the murder.
