‘Batwoman’ Season Two Will Have A New Lead Character After Ruby Rose Departure

If you were concerned about losing an openly lesbian superhero on TV, it looks like you don’t have to worry.

After mysteriously quitting her role as Kate Kane in “Batwoman” at the beginning of May, Ruby Rose broke her silence on the departure just a week ago via an Instagram post. Since then, the question of who would take over her role lingered in the air — as well as what Kane’s character would look like now.

But it looks like Kane won’t be involved in season two at all, thanks to information from a casting notice that was leaked on Reddit. Instead, The CW and Warner Bros. Television seem to be casting a completely a brand new character to fill out the batsuit: Ryan Wilder. The now-deleted casting notice described Wilder as:

“She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”

If you were concerned about losing an openly lesbian superhero on TV, it looks like you don’t have to worry. Instead of Kane passing the baton over to some boring straight, the casting notice notes that Wilder will be “an out lesbian” — and hopefully the actress portraying her is too. Either way, we can thankfully look forward to more lesbians making out on our screens.

“Batwoman” was renewed back in January and center around Kane, an out lesbian. As the cousin of Bruce Wayne (aka Batman), Kane takes over the role of Batwoman to protect Gotham City in Batman’s absence.
