Amy Poehler returned to Saturday Night Live over the weekend, hosting for the first time in more than a decade. Among the night’s highlights was a pre-taped sketch featuring her Parks and Recreation co-star Aubrey Plaza in a parody of Netflix’s The Hunting Wives, a drama known for its high-drama blend of sex, scandal, and Southern intrigue.

Presented as a trailer for a fictional second season, the SNL spoof opened with a narrator describing the original show as “the straight-but-lesbian, horny Republican murder drama.” The parody captured the glossy melodrama and exaggerated sensuality that have made the series a hit.

“Millions of Americans tuned into season one of The Hunting Wives,” the narrator announced. “And now, it’s back for more.”

Poehler appeared as Margo, a take on Malin Akerman’s character from the Netflix series, sporting an intentionally uneven red wig. “Look what the cat dragged in,” she says, lowering the straps of her dress in mock seduction before stopping to adjust her hair. The narrator continues, “All your faves are back, and they’re as naughty as ever. Thighs will be squeezed, guns will be drawn.”

Chloe Fineman portrays Sophie, based on Brittany Snow’s character, while Sarah Sherman and Ashley Padilla round out the group of “hunting wives.” Plaza enters partway through the trailer as a newcomer to the Texas social circle, described by the narrator as “the new new girl who joins the group.”

The tone shifts when Plaza’s character reveals that she has a girlfriend rather than a boyfriend. The other women, initially welcoming, react with alarm and point their rifles at her while shouting, “Lesbian?! This is Texas!”

The sketch also includes a joke referencing People magazine’s fictional review of the series, which describes it as “like Call Me By Your Name for women who shop at Bass Pro Shop.”

Following the broadcast, several members of The Hunting Wives cast responded online. Malin Akerman shared the clip on Instagram, writing, “Omg @nbcsnl this is the best thing I’ve ever seen!!! 😂 Hunting Wives season 2 premiere (?!) Yessssss!!!!” Jaime Ray Newman posted on her Instagram story, “SNL?!?!? Mind officially BLOWN.” Brittany Snow commented, “It’s just us & the beans. My life is made.”

Netflix announced in September that The Hunting Wives had been renewed for a second season. In a statement at the time, creator Rebecca Cutter said, “I’m so excited to write these amazing characters again, and I can’t wait to take the audience on another sexy, twisted, batshit crazy ride through Maple Brook.”

Among the many inevitable cliffhangers to come, we can’t wait to find out if the wives ever perfect that mimosa ratio.
