“After knowing each other for 40 years and be in a relationship for 9, Shara and I got married at the Hollywood Roosevelt on Sunday March 8th,” Chaz Bono took to IG to announce the nuptial news this past weekend. Bono, the son of superstar Cher and the late Sonny Bono, and Shara Blue Mathes tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at The Hollywood Roosevelt hotel in L.A. on Sunday, March 8.

“I first met Shara more than 40 years ago when we were just teenagers,” Bono said in an exclusive with People published March 13. “I think it’s safe to say that not many grooms ultimately end up marrying the very first girl they ever kissed so many years later.” The couple first met as teens while attending the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. The magic kicked in when a reconnection in 2017 turned romantic.

The bride wore an A-line wedding gown with long lacy sleeves and a veil. In her hands, a bouquet of purple orchids and red flowers. The groom sported a classic black tuxedo and bow tie, and a purple calla lily boutonnière that complimented his wife’s arrangement. According to People, Cher, the mother of the groom, wore a black ensemble and “looked on from the front row as the couple took a romantic dip at the end of the black aisle, which was lined with glowing red candles and moody floral arrangements.”

“She makes me feel complete knowing she will always be there beside me as partner, my best friend, and the love of my life,” Bono told People. “No matter what life brings us, we will always be safer and stronger together… and we are home.”

“This past weekend I stepped into a real live Fairytale and married my longtime sweetheart! It was the happiest, most magical wedding a bride could dream of… ” Mathes posted on IG. On Monday, the self-described Blissed out Bride shared a video of her first dance with her hub to Frank Sinatra’s, “The Way You Look Tonight.”

Between the two, Bono is more the public figure. What do we know about Mathes? She is the proud mom of a 25-year-old son from a previous marriage. She has also publicly opened up about her journey with breast cancer. For his part, Bono has spoken to his partner’s “incredible strength and dignity.”

Bono first caught the public eye as an adorable child on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour back in the 1970s. Today, he is known as an LGBTQ activist, writer and entertainer. He was the first openly transgender contestant on Dancing with the Stars in 2011 where he nailed the cha-cha-cha. He is also known for his 2011 documentary, Becoming Chaz, which followed his gender transition journey. While his mom Cher has openly admitted to some initial struggles around her son’s transition, over the years, she has been supportive, consistently expressing her happiness that “Chaz is so happy, so unbelievably happy… “
