Celebrate the chart-toppers and scene-stealers who spoke their truth in 2024.

2024 saw a powerful wave of female stars stepping into the spotlight and flourishing. From chart-topping musicians to celebrated actors, these artists shattered barriers and inspired countless fans by coming out and sharing their stories with the world. Not only did they make headlines, but they also underscored the importance of visibility in the fight for equality and acceptance.

Here are 13 women who have come out in 2024.

Sophia Bush

In an essay for Glamour Magazine, the One Tree Hill actor came out as queer and confirmed her relationship with former U.S. soccer player Ashlyn Harris. “I am so lucky to be here, now. I have real joy. It took me 41 years to get here,” she wrote.

Amber Ruffin

On the final night of Pride Month, comedian Amber Ruffin shared a cheerful photo of herself sporting a shirt emblazoned with the word “Queer.” Alongside the image, Ruffin wrote, “Be proud of who you are, little babies! I know I am!” She also noted that exactly zero people would be surprised by the news.

Julia Fox

Fox officially used the term “lesbian” to describe herself in a TikTok video that understandably broke the internet.

Maren Morris

Country music got a little queerer when Maren Morris, formerly a fierce LGBTQ+ ally, officially joined the team. In a Pride post on Instagram, the five-time CMA award winner came out as bisexual with photos of her holding a Pride flag and a caption, “happy to be the B in LGBTQ+.”

Louisa Jacobson

Actor Louisa Jacobson, daughter of Oscar-winning Meryl Streep, publicly came out as a lesbian and hard launched her relationship in one fell swoop via Instagram. Her post was captioned, “blessed to be entering the Joyful New Era bb,” accompanied by flaming heart and LGBTQ Pride flag emojis. The first of six photos featured Jacobson with producer Anna Blundell. The second image was a screenshot of a New York Times article titled “We’re Entering a Joyful New Era of Lesbian Fashion.”

Sasheer Zamata

SNL Alum Agatha All Along star Sasheer Zamata realized that, although she was often being cast in queer roles, she wasn’t fully out. “I’m out in my life and I do keep my personal life kind of private, but I also don’t necessarily want my identity to be private,” she told Them. “I guess I’m one of those late-in-life lesbians. I just feel very comfortable and confident in my life.”

Chloë Grace Moretz

Chloë Grace Moretz publicly came out as gay while endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. In an Instagram post, the actor underscored the need for LGBTQ legal protections while identifying herself as a “gay woman.”

Reneé Rapp

In an interview with Them, pop star and actor Reneé Rapp opened up about coming out as a lesbian after previously identifying as bisexual. “I had privately been calling myself a lesbian, saying it to my friends, and I heard a couple of comments that really hurt my feelings,” she shared. One remark, Rapp recalled with sarcasm, was: “Oh, amazing, you’re coming out again. Congratulations.”

Zoe Lister-Jones

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the Spirit Awards, Lister-Jones shared details about a new romance in her life, having attended the event with her partner. “I’m here, I’m queer, I have some fear but I’m working through it,” the actor said, revealing her relationship with filmmaker Sammi Cohen.

Chappell Roan

Chappell Roan has long embraced her queer identity, but during a tour stop in Ohio earlier this year, the singer offered a more specific revelation. “Some s–t’s changed, but b–ch, I hope you’re happy, ’cause I’m a lesbian now,” she told the crowd, as captured in a fan video. Speaking with Rolling Stone, Roan shared how she recently came to fully understand her sexuality. Reflecting on her past relationships with men, she explained, “Finally it’s like, ‘Oh, I know why. It’s because I’m gay, and nothing’s actually wrong with me.’” She added, “I just wasn’t supposed to be sleeping with men, and now the thought of even kissing a guy repulses me—because no one’s going to compare to girls.”

Bethany Antonia

House of the Dragon star Bethany Antonia confronted a racist troll on Instagram by coming out publicly. The actor shared a screenshot of a hateful message she received on her Instagram Story, adding, “Wait till they find out I’m gay too…” Fans praised Antonia for her courage and applauded her resilience in the face of online abuse.

Jessica Madsen

Jessica Madsen, best known for her role as Cressida Cowper in Bridgerton, celebrated Pride Month with a coming-out post. “In love with a woman, loud about it and proud about it!” Madsen wrote in the caption, adding a rainbow emoji and the hashtags #pride, #pridemonth, #loveislove, and #gaypride.

Ayesha Madon

The star of Netflix’s Heartbreak High opened up about her sexuality in an interview with the U.K.-based outlet Gay Times. “I only really admitted out loud that I was bisexual two or three years ago,” Madon shared. “It feels recent.” She added, “It’s pretty interesting watching myself be attracted to [girls]. My first kiss was with a girl. I’ve actually never spoken about my sexuality before, so this is pretty new for me.”

Cheers to everyone who has embraced and celebrated their queer identity this year!
