100 Women We Love: Charla Harlow

We are thrilled to present the 2013 list of 100 Women We Love – Including…

Multitalented media entrepreneur Charla Harlow is a director, producer and photographer for the Harlow Project, a production company dedicated to telling the stories of people of color. “I chose the field of TV and film because I didn't see myself represented in the media and wanted to give a voice to the LGBT community and women of color,” says Harlow, who is based in Brooklyn. “Instead of complaining about the lack of positive portrayals of women, people of color or members of LGBT community, I decided to do something about it and created my own site.” Her most recent project, in(HER)view, is a bi-weekly series that asks five black women the same eight questions about their life experiences—from what they love about being black, to the challenges they face as women. Harlow is also in preproduction on a street-harassment video series for which she'll travel across the U.S. and abroad capturing real-life stories on camera. But because she’s not one to kick back and rest, Harlow also is producing a feature-length documentary about skin bleaching in communities of color. When she’s not spearheading her own projects, she’s a camera operator for shows like ABC’s What Would You Do? Fortunately, Harlow already knows what to do, and does it well.  –NHM
