‘Warrior Nun’ May Be Coming Back–But There’s A Catch
Here’s what fans need to know about the latest update.
Warrior Nun might be coming back—but fans of the Netflix series should temper their excitement.
On Thursday, Deadline reported that showrunner Simon Barry is in the process of negotiating some of the underlying rights to the comic books. His production company, Reality Distortion Field (RDF), told the publication that scoring these rights would allow them to launch a film and TV universe focused on “unexplored elements” of the world.
“Returning to the Warrior Nun universe is something I’ve been thinking about since the original series aired,” Barry said. “We have a fabulous opportunity not only to dive into more fantastic stories from elements of the Warrior Nun universe, but also to bring our incredible global fanbase of nunkind more of what they loved from the comic book series.”
Fans of the Netflix series rallied repeatedly in attempts to save the show from cancelation, but it ultimately wrapped with season two in 2022. And while the possibility of Barry securing the rights for further adaptations may initially sound promising, fans should know that this doesn’t mean the show is coming back.
In fact, RDF told Deadline that there are currently no discussions taking place with the previous cast to return.
For the fans who fought tooth and nail for more Warrior Nun, this is an important distinction. Both Ava Silva (Alba Baptista) and Sister Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young), along with a number of other elements in the series, were created just for the show. Even utilizing these characters with a different cast would likely involve an entirely separate set of rights issues linked to Netflix.
Could an entirely different Warrior Nun adaptation work? Sure, maybe. But to suggest that the existing fanbase–one that fell in love with a relationship between characters strictly from the TV show–is clamoring for more of the comic book universe feels disingenuous.
Still, this isn’t to say it’s impossible for the Netflix version of Warrior Nun to ever return; crazier revivals have certainly taken place over the years. And some fans are certainly holding out hope that this is a small step in the right direction.
The Warrior Nun fandom has always been loud and outspoken about their love for the short-lived show and their yearning to see it return for a proper conclusion. Even now, four years after it ended, the real takeaway should be how quickly the #SaveWarriorNun corner of social media lit up with even the possibility that it could return.
For their sake, we can only hope Netflix is paying attention.
