Carrie Coon and Bella Ramsey’s Cult Drama ‘The Liberation’ Trailer Just Dropped, and I Really Need You to Watch It
I am being very normal about this. I swear.
Today Bleecker Street dropped the trailer for its upcoming cult drama The Liberation, starring the divine Carrie Coon, Bella Ramsey and Lily James, and I can’t stop watching it. I need you to join me, but, you know, not in a cult way.
But in all seriousness, this trailer is teasing a movie that is likely to devastate you in the best way possible. According to the synopsis, the film follows Rita (Coon), a middle-aged woman haunted by unprocessed trauma who meets a magnetic young spiritual leader, Ricki (James), becomes enthralled with her and leaves her family to follow her to an all-female commune.
However, things take a turn when her daughters, Ella (Bella Ramsey) and Jo (Odessa Young), arrive at the compound and find themselves similarly drawn to its seductive teachings, leaving Rita to make an impossible choice between her family and what she believes is her only salvation.
And if you’re wondering why this particular cast has our sapphic radar going off, well, there’s plenty of reason. Carrie Coon is already a lesbian favorite (and for good reason), Bella Ramsey is a nonbinary actor who played lesbian icon Ellie Williams in The Last of Us, Lily James has inspired plenty of queer readings with her role in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and Odessa Young played a closeted lesbian in HBO’s The Staircase. In other words, this cast has our attention. Our undivided, extremely gay attention.
The cast and plot alone are enough to shoot this film right to the tippy-top of my must-watch list (also, a kiss between James and Coon in the trailer doesn’t hurt). But when I tell you the trailer is promising what appear to be tour-de-force performances by all the aforementioned women, I suspect we will never recover.
Don’t believe me? Watch for yourself, and be very normal about it with me.
