On Aug 16, join Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) for LIGALY presents: On the Bay, a breezy, waterfront afternoon in the Hamptons complete with food, drink and a silent auction to benefit LIGALY, a not-for-profit LGBT organization that provides advocacy and support to Long Island’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.

Give your day at the beach a little shot in the arm on Aug 13, when Angelique Irizarry and Shescape Events present Diva Dodgeball ‘08, a sexy championship dodgeball tournament on the beach in Fire Island’s female-friendly Cherry Grove. Diva Dodgeball offers girl-on-girl action for both players and voyeurs, so whether you’re playing or cheering, work up a summertime sweat with the divas and cool off at the after-party at Cherry’s on the Bay, featuring complimentary BBQ and a variety of music.

Who’s got game? Join GO and the New York Liberty at Chelsea Piers on Aug 8 for a free basketball clinic led by Liberty Head Coach Pat Coyle, Assistant Coach Bruce Hamburger and starters Loree Moore and Cathrine Kraayeveld! Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout August, Freedom Train Productions presents: Fire!, a free theater festival honoring black LGBT perspectives and featuring black LGBT hero and “shero” characters. The program kicks off on Aug 6 with Lambda-award winning playwright/cultural historian Sharon Bridgeforth’s delta dandi, the story of a conjure woman from Congo Square, New Orleans. Talk-backs with the artists follow each performance.

Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAAD) President Neil Giuliano and the GLAAD Board of Directors invite you to join them for GLAAD Hamptons presented by Bacardi, a Saturday afternoon at the home of Robert Erdman & Doug Huffmyer. Sip Bacardi cocktails, nibble on hors d’oeuvres and enjoy live entertainment and updates on GLAAD’s current projects and recent accomplishments.

The Pride celebration continues in the Garden State with Jersey City Pride on Aug 23. Pride festivities include a pulsing street fair plus live entertainment by alternative soul singer Martine Downey, comedian Jackie Monahan, spoken-word artist Dujana Sharese, Smart Pop musician Mara Levi and powerpop/rock band Odd Girl Out, among others.

Aug 9 is Indigenous Peoples Day at the American Museum of Natural History. In recognition of the United Nations’ International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, this event is free with museum admission and features a special concert with Hawaii’s Halau I Ka Wekiu, as well as an indigenous Caribbean cultural presentation by members of the Cacibajagua Taino Cultural Society.

Sept 14 marks the opening of The Marvelous Wondrettes, a high-octane musical from writer/director Roger Bean. Set in 1958, the story follows four high-school girlfriends around their much-anticipated sock-hopping senior prom. Packed with classic tunes, including “Lollipop,” “It’s My Party” and “It’s In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song),” The Marvelous Wondrettes is the perfect way to scratch your golden oldies itch.
