“The L Word: Generation Q” Episode 204: Secrets, Sex, & Sadness

August 30, 2021

As if this season hasn’t already been bad enough for Dani.

It’s never a good sign when, upon returning home after a fun night out, you’re greeted by the sight of police cars parked outside your family’s house. As if this season hasn’t already been bad enough for Dani … .

This week, we learned why the Feds had parked themselves outside the Nunez home while Dani was out bonding with new BFF (or something more…), Gigi: her father, very much alive and uninjured, was being led away from the house in handcuffs. Obviously, some white-collar crime has transpired — and explains why he was so keen on having his daughter fill out power-of-attorney paperwork in last week’s episode — but despite their attempts to learn more, neither Dani nor Gigi can get much info out of officers on the scene.

In lighter news, the episode began on a positive note for Finley, who invited Sophie for a curbside sushi dinner late that evening. Sophie said yes, but in “L Word” universe, we know it’s only a matter of time before fate, in the form of Dani’s latest plight, intervenes.

And so began a series of surprise events and revelations, some pleasant, others less so, which befell many of our beloved characters in this latest episode.

Angie, newly connected with half-sister, Kaylee, learns devastating news about her biological father, Marcus, leading her to confide first in Shane, and then in Micah when she decides to seek out a therapist to speak to.

Whatever the news is, we know Mama B probably won’t be thrilled once she finds out, but then Bette has other things on her mind, like tracking down reclusive artist Pippa Pascal, played by guest star Vanessa Williams. After tracking Pascal to a farm outside the city, Bette, through her dogged determination, secures a dinner date with the reclusive artist. While Pippa has zero interest in working with Zakarian, she’s a lot more receptive of Bette, telling her, after Bette grabs her hand pleadingly, “Don’t touch me like this, unless you’re coming home with me.”

Bette doesn’t, for now, but the encounter clearly leaves an impression on her. In the next scene, she’s having wild, make-up sex with Gigi to Fletcher’s “The One” (“You’re not the one/but you’re the one right now.”)

Jodie Lerner, anyone?

Speaking of sparks flying–After getting a call from Micah that Dani is in trouble, Sophie drives out to the Nunez home in Ojai, where she finds her ex-fiance wallowing in her sorrow, and take-out Thai food. Things are rough at first, but after the two share a tender moment on the back patio, they fall back into bed together. But theirs isn’t make-up sex of the forgiving kind. Dani’s rage is renewed when Sophie comes clean about her dinner plans with Finley, which she’s since broken off.

“Well is it not over? Between us?” Sophie asks. Probably not the thing to ask your ex after answering a call from the woman who ruined your wedding, and a guaranteed way to ensure the relationship is, most likely, over.

Sophie’s in trouble with Finley, too, once Micah accidentally spills the tea that she’d cancelled their dinner plans to be with Dani in Ojai, leading Finley to take comfort in the nearest liquor store.

Meanwhile, Alice is forced to confront her own past when Tom insists that she open up about the loss of Dana in her book. Although she refuses at first, she eventually comes clean with how she feels in a touching monologue that leaves her — and all of us watching — in tears.

The news isn’t all gloomy, though. Micah tells Mirabel, with whom he has formed a touching friendship, that he is interested in dating women — and it’s clear from his growing attachment to Mirabel that he means one woman, in particular, although he’s just too shy to say it.

And after a touching heart-to-heart with Tess about her ill mother, who’s in a care home in Las Vegas, Shane plants her with a surprise kiss. But Tess is seeing someone else, she explains as she backs away, leaving Shane to bumble about awkwardly.

They aren’t the only couple left in limbo. Just before the credits roll, Dani and Sophie, now fully dressed and outside, Sophie ready to depart for the city, Dani tells her, “I think we dodged a bullet, you and me.”

“You do?” Sophie asks.

“Just got too hard,” Dani explains. “But it doesn’t feel hard now.”

“No. It doesn’t.”

“Maybe you should stay,” Dani suggests.

Does Sophie stay, or are she and Dani finally finished for good? Will Bette see Pippa again? Will Micah finally work up the courage to ask Mirabel out? What will things be like for Alice now that she’s finally opened up about the emotional toll Dana’s death has had on her? And just what is wrong with Angie’s biological dad? We’ll have to wait until next week to find out!
