Leisha Hailey: Back in Action on Hit NBC Sitcom

Not so normal actress

Girl, where you been?! Leisha Hailey, known from her bands The Murmurs and Uh Huh Her, and as our lovable Alice Pieszecki in Showtime’s The L Word, will be joining the cast of NBC’s highly anticipated fall comedy The New Normal.

The comedy features actors Andrew Rannells and Justin Bartha as a gay couple who opt to use a surrogate mother to expand their family, The series provides a comedic yet sometimes heavy depiction of the journey gay men and women face when deciding to start a family. Along with Constance Zimmer, who will be Hailey’s girlfriend on the show, Hailey has been scheduled to appear on the season’s seventh episode, which will air October 23. Their appearance is designed to show the diversity of family dynamics that exist today, aside from just the gay male perspective of the show’s lead characters.

Hailey and Zimmer will play Victoria and Tiffany, respectively, a contrasting lesbian couple, with one as the fun-loving type and the other a more serious accountant, bitter about the problems of having a family with her partner. (Guess which one Hailey is.)
The show’s co-creator, Ali Adler, is herself an out lesbian and mother who hopes that adding this lesbian element will surprise people and help to show viewers that lesbian and gay couples do exist, they do love each other and they do want families just like everyone else. Gay or straight, a parent is a parent: “We’re all just complaining about getting up in the middle of the night or being tired from work,” Adler said recently in an interview.

Tune in and catch Hailey on The New Normal. After all, she is a lesbian, and she plays one on TV.
