Hurricane Maria has been a devastating nightmare for the people of Puerto Rico. According to the record books, it is the fifth-strongest storm to ever exist in the United States, tragically killing at least ten people. Millions of people are unable to get in touch with their families, the entire island is without electricity and whole communities have been completely destroyed.

So many of us on the United States mainland are reeling with panic as communication with the Island is wildly strained. 3.4  million American Citizens reside in Puerto Rico, and Puerto Rico is the home to so many of our loved ones.

“We’re talking here about major devastation. And when we say major devastation, that means that in terms of infrastructure, we have full communities that 80 or 90 percent of the homes are a complete disaster. They are totally lost.” Carlos Mercader (a spokesperson for the Puerto Rican Government) told PBS NewsHour.

Those of us who are unable to communicate with our friends and family, or those of us who are just feeling the collective grief in the wake of this epic disaster have found ourselves in the throes of anxiety and sadness. It’s easy to feel completely helpless in times like these, times that are so outside the realm of our control. It’s also extremely difficult to know exactly where to donate your money, as so many corrupt organizations take advantage of disasters such as this.

We’ve put together a list of reputable charities that are actively working to help the people (and animals) of Puerto Rico. Please consider donating. Every tiny bit helps.

United For Puerto Rico

United for Puerto Rico is a widely respected “initiative brought forth by the First lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rosselló in collaboration with the private sector, with the purpose of providing aid and support to those affected in Puerto Rico by the passage of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane María.” They are actively supporting the people of Puerto Rico and desperately need our help.

Boys and Girls Club Of Puerto Rico

The Boys and Girls Club, Puerto Rico needs our help as it is the key safe place for so many of our young people who live on the Island. To donate go directly to the website of the Boys and Girls Club of Puerto Rico.

Unicef

The Sato Project

The Sato Project is there for our four-legged friend’s dogs who need our human help! Thousands of animals are helpless, lost and freezing cold in the wake of this disaster.

“We’re in this for the long haul. Will be on the ground in PR tomorrow to start evacuating dogs. Please donate here: https://t.co/c6pPbfX6IU pic.twitter.com/NlnU17ex56″

The Miami Foundation

The Miami Foundation is currently seeking donations to help relieve the people of Puerto Rico who are need of clothes, shelter and food.

Save The children

Our heart goes out to our GO Family who is affected by this disaster.
