If you were seated in 2015 watching Hayley Kiyoko’s “Girls Like Girls” music video for the first time, you remember it. The drama. The tension. The cinematography. The way the final scene had you holding your breath. It wasn’t just a music video—it was a masterpiece.

Now imagine that story as a full-length feature film.

Oh wait. It already is.

The official trailer for Girls Like Girls dropped yesterday, and it’s already racking up more than 3 million likes on YouTube in under 24 hours. The internet is stoked. One fan summed it up the best: “Went from an iconic music video to an amazing book and now a movie 🥹 I’m so proud of Hayley and I can’t wait to watch!!!!!”

The film hits theaters on June 19, 2026, right in the heart of Pride Month.

And if the trailer has you feeling nostalgic, that’s because this moment has been ten years in the making.

The announcement coincides with the 10th anniversary of the original Girls Like Girls music video, which premiered on June 24, 2015 and has since amassed more than 145 million views. In 2019, Billboard named the song one of the “30 Lesbian Love Songs.” In 2023, Kiyoko expanded the story into a New York Times bestselling novel, deepening the world of the main characters, Coley and Sonya.

For the uninitiated (respectfully), the music video follows Coley and Sonya as they slowly come to terms with their feelings for each other. Sonya’s boyfriend becomes an obstacle—and in the video’s most intense moments, he assaults Coley after catching the two about to kiss. Coley fights back. Sonya pulls her away. The video ends with the girls together, bruised but blissful. This was messy, emotional, and groundbreaking for its time.

Now the film expands that emotional core into a full coming-of-age story.

Starring up-and-coming actresses, Maya da Costa and Myra Molloy, the movie follows Coley (de Costa) in rural Oregon as she navigates intimacy and identity after her mother’s passing. When she meets Sonya (Molloy), there are immediate sparks and a rush of new feelings neither of them can ignore. The story centers on first love, grief, and self-acceptance. As a sapphic girlie, who hasn’t been in a homo-erotic friendship that blurred every possible line? Painful? Very. Relatable? Unfortunately, yes. Necessary for character development? Mmm, depends on who you ask.

Joining the two are Zach Braff, Levon Hawke, Hunter Dillion, Remy Marthaller, Maya Ford, and Wayne Caorbeil.

Kiyoko co-wrote the screenplay with Stefanie Scott, who originally portrayed Coley in the 2015 music video—a true full circle moment. The film is produced by Marc Platt, Katie McNicol, Adam Siegel, Dee Best, Michael Philip, Jason Moring, and Richard Alan Reid.

From viral music video to bestselling novel to feature film, Girls Like Girls has officially entered its cinematic era. And with a Pride Month release date and millions already obsessing over the trailer, it’s clear this isn’t just nostalgia—it’s legacy.
