The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine invites the people of New York City to a Service for the Victims of Natural Disaster in the Caribbean and Mexico, 12 Noon to 2 p.m., on Saturday, October 7 the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue at 112th St., New York, NY.

In a letter to the church, The Rt. Rev. Andrew M.L. Dietsche, Bishop of New York, wrote:
The last week and a half has seen, in the hurricane which has ravaged Puerto Rico, the latest in a series of natural disasters which has, in just over a month, visited unspeakable ruin upon Texas, Florida, the Caribbean (especially the Virgin Islands and Cuba), Mexico, and now Puerto Rico. Countless people in our diocese have been personally affected by these storms. Indeed, members of my own staff have lived through harrowing days in the last week waiting for word from missing family members. I know that they represent thousands of New Yorkers who have carried the same fears for those they love.

We have, following each of these events, provided information on how people in our diocese may help the victims of these disasters. We believe that the best resource for us as Episcopalians is Episcopal Relief & Development, and we have commended that to you. Possibly a quarter of the people of our diocese, our brothers and sisters, are West Indians, and in these their days of peril and fear I ask that we be one with them in prayer at the altars of our churches, and I invite you to join me in our cathedral on the 7th.

Spanish-speaking officiants will be in attendance.
