Workin’ It (Part 2) 2009
Chef/Owner, Bristen’s Eatery
Carleen Haughton, owner of Bristen’s Eatery in Crown Heights, Brooklyn was born in Kingston, Jamaica and migrated to the United States in 1984. She graduated from Hofstra University with a BS in Economics and Finance, and worked on Wall Street for 18 years. Haughton is committed to keeping prices affordable, while also using the best ingredients from local farmers and other local businesses. The menu includes hearty dishes such as omelettes, French toast, pancakes, generously stuffed paninis and burgers. Bristen’s is also dedicated to the community and working with youth. Her goal is to maintain a safe place for people to exchange information, have community meetings, play dates or just chat.
The Rest of the Best Of 2009’s Red Hot Entrepreneurs

Lizzy Rosenshine & Angela Lowe
Owners, Funky Lala Productions
Angela Lowe moved to New York City a decade ago with little more than a few bucks she had saved. Armed with sheer determination and confidence, Lowe turned her “bright lights, big dreams” ideal into a reality. After starting her own fitness studio catering to record label executives and A-listers, Lowe steered her passion back to her true
childhood dream and began designing a line of custom clothing. From there, Funky Lala Productions, a full-service fashion business consulting firm, was born. Lowe has since designed for such celebrities as Nelly Furtado, Alicia Keys and Prince and produced
fashion shows for over 100 designers, including Patricia Field and Rodarte. In partnership with her wife, Lizzy Rosenshine, Lowe opened a brick and mortar boutique in 2007 to compliment their e-commerce site FunkyLala.com (est. 1999) which features over 140 lines, including her own line of clothing. Rosenshine is the operations and organizational guru while Lowe gives the shop its creative edge.
