Whitney Cummings’ Theory About Lesbian Firefighters Is A Real Doozy

January 14, 2025

Whitney Cummings waves to the camera

Comedy is subjective—isn't that the saying?

Don’t bother searching for the punchline in comedian Whitney Cummings’ take on the devastating Los Angeles fires; we wouldn’t know where to start.

The best-case scenario is that the video is satire. In a clip posted to X, Cummings starts by saying, “Like everyone I am trying to figure out how this happened in California so I don’t say something that’s inaccurate.”

She then goes on to say several inaccurate things.

Cummings references Los Angeles’s first openly LGBTQ+ fire chief, Kristin Crowley. “I came across a video of the fire chief. A lesbian. Love it. Tried to be one, didn’t take,” she quips. “I don’t think I’m a lesbian… I live in Los Angeles. The men are so effeminate that, honestly, at this point, dating a woman is like the straightest thing you can do.”

Crowley, who has decades of firefighting experience, has faced criticism in the media from those who have labeled her a “DEI hire” and questioned her qualifications despite her extensive credentials.

Cummings, in what we sincerely hope is a parody of a conspiracy theorist, acknowledges that “lesbians can be firefighters” before suggesting that lesbian leaders like Crowley might be “recruiting more lesbians” to the detriment of the Los Angeles Fire Department. “Isn’t that essentially just recruiting people in your dating pool to work at your office?” she asks.

The video ends with Cummings referencing an X post claiming, “All of the people in charge of LA’s fire response are lesbians named Kristin.” She concludes, “I don’t recall voting on a proposition that said we could recruit our fire team off Grindr. What?”

See, it’s funny because the character she’s playing doesn’t know Grindr is an app used by gay men… or something. We warned you, don’t look for a punchline.

Firefighting efforts as of Tuesday are severely hindered by powerful Santa Ana winds, with gusts surpassing 70 mph, making containment efforts increasingly difficult. Evacuation orders have forced hundreds of thousands of residents to flee their homes, while critical fire weather warnings persist across the region. Emergency services face immense challenges as they work tirelessly to combat the relentless blazes.
