From Perth to Brazil, women’s soccer closed out 2025 with love, legacy, and two very gay “I do’s.”

2026 is already turning out to be a great year for women’s soccer fans who love love. Two queer power couples tied the knot, reminding us that love stories in women’s sport are very much thriving.

On New Year’s Eve, Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis were married at Villa Dionysus, a Mediterranean-style private estate in Swan Valley just outside Perth. The celebration brought together around 120 guests, including several of Kerr’s Matildas teammates, for a black-and-white themed ceremony that quickly turned into a full-blown party.

Kerr, the long-time captain of Australia’s national team and a Chelsea striker, wore a classic black tux paired with her now-iconic low ponytail, a look she’s committed to through finals, trophies, and now her wedding day. Mewis wore a beaded off-the-shoulder gown for the ceremony before changing into a strapless look for the reception.

Kerr is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players Australia has ever produced, holding the record as the Matildas’ all-time leading goal scorer. Mewis brings her own decorated resume to the partnership, with years in the NWSL and international competitions, making the duo one of the most accomplished couples in the sport.

The couple’s relationship first captured the internet during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, when Mewis was photographed consoling Kerr after the U.S. defeated Australia. The image went viral and inspired an iconic Twitter exchange that quietly confirmed what fans already suspected.

Kerr proposed to Mewis in September 2023 in Newport, Rhode Island. The couple welcomed their son, Jagger, in May 2025, and he was part of the wedding celebrations in Perth.

But Kerr and Mewis weren’t the only queer soccer couple marking a milestone over the holiday.

Also ringing in the new year, Brazilian soccer legend Marta married her partner Carrie Lawrence, sharing the news quietly on social media. While details of the ceremony were kept private, the significance of the moment was anything but small. Marta and Carrie first met as teammates with the Orlando Pride in the NWSL, began dating in 2022, and built their relationship from there before tying the knot. Lawrence, a former professional defender, spent her entire career with Pride, winning both an NWSL Shield and an NWSL Championship before retiring in 2024.

Marta is widely regarded as one of the greatest women’s soccer players of all time, full stop. A six-time FIFA World Player of the Year and the all-time leading goal scorer in Women’s World Cup history, her influence on the sport spans generations. Her wedding felt less like a spectacle and more like a soft, powerful footnote to an already historic legacy.

Where Kerr and Mewis celebrated with teammates, champagne, and a dance floor, Marta and Lawrence’s moment reflected a quieter kind of joy. Together, the two weddings highlighted the breadth of queer visibility in women’s sport. Loud and soft. Public and private. Both are incredibly meaningful.

As women’s soccer continues to grow on a global stage, moments like these matter. Not because queer athletes owe anyone visibility, but because seeing joy, love, and longevity feels especially radical in a sports world that once tried to erase it.

Two weddings. One New Year’s. A very good omen for 2026.
