The Very Best of NYC Special Events

Mae West’s Birthday Bash, Spice NYC’s Charity Benefit, the New York Liberty and more…

An eclectic group of artists will donate their time to perform for the SPICE NYC Charity Event at Soirée on Sep 10. In celebration of SPICE NYC’s 2nd anniversary, the events company will host a benefit for Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Residence, New York’s first permanent housing with support services facility for homeless LGBT youth, ages 18–24.  The True Colors Residence is slated to open in Central Harlem, NYC in 2011.

Jersey City Lesbian + Gay Outreach, Inc. (JCLGO) will host the 10th Annual Jersey City LGBT Pride Festival on Aug 28 at Exchange Place, Jersey City, NJ. The festival will feature a vendor market place and an entertainment line-up showcasing LGBT talent from around the region. This year, for the first time, the festivities will be preceded by a rally at City Hall, after which participants will march down Montgomery Street into the festival area. The purpose of the rally and march is to highlight the importance of LGBT equality and legal protections, not afforded to all members of our society.

The BROADS are back on Broadway Aug 14, as the Empress of Sex, Mae West and The Last of the Red Hot Mamas, Sophie Tucker take to the stage at the Actors Temple Theater for Mae West’s Birthday Bash. The evening will include plenty of songs, jokes and one-liners guaranteed to raise the roof. In dazzling costume, Sophie Tucker will tell everyone that “A Good Man’s Hard to Find.” In her signature hour-glass corset and feathered hat, Mae West will be on more laps than a napkin.

A bumper-to-bumper crop of vintage Volkswagens will be rolling onto the Island for a first-of-its-kind car show and picnic, open to all. Check out beetles, buses, Karmann Ghias, dune buggies and other colorful, classic VWs from the 1950s–1970s, and the drivers who love them. Enjoy a day of VDub love, food, drink, music and more.

Lead by All-Star veterans Cappie Pondexter, Nicole Powell and Taj McWilliams-Franklin, the lady b-ballers of the New York Liberty are storming their way through the competition with their sights set on the Championship trophy. First they take on WNBA superstars Diana Taurasi and Candice Dupree and all the stars of the Phoenix Mercury, and on Aug 22 they take on the always competitive Connecticut Sun.
