The Very Best Of NYC Music (October 2009)

GSX, Blasted! and more!

GSX rocks Arlene’s Grocery on Oct 9 with their chest-pounding, head-banging, blistering sound. Their mission: to get the rockers up front and feeling it. GSX brings a strong message: rock’n’roll still matters. At the heart of GSX is British transplant Sarah Greenwood—a classically trained, axe-wielding rock siren with mind-blowing chops. On stage she paces, stalks, restlessly moving as she bullies her guitar. At the mic, her voice alternates currents of sweaty throated passion and tight, hard, growling snarls. When Sarah Greenwood was asked to describe GSX’s sound, her response was: "Joan Jett, Chrissie Hyde, PJ Harvey, and Courtney Love all split an egg and it’s fathered by Lemmy [from Motörhead]." Indeed. Do yourself a favor and catch ’em while you can!

Singer/songwriter/electric-violinist/poet/rocker Bitch takes the stage at Joe’s Pub on Oct 17, celebrating the completion of her upcoming spring release Blasted! with a live concert appearance.  Since producing a record and touring all last year with her folk-idol Ferron, Bitch has started her own lable, Short Story Records, cut off all her dread-locks and suffered a heartbreak that fueled the fire out of which great albums are born. Blasted! was born in back seats, by wood-stoves, in her band-mates’ Brooklyn room and by the sheer will of an artist who has always continued to expand her musical and song-writing limits This not-to-be-missed event will showcase material featured on Bitch’s new release—a sonic jump that mixes her love of record production with her signature
electric-violin-poetic-rock.
