The Very Best of NYC Dance

Come Undone, Gotham Dance Festival, 2nd Annual Dance Against Cancer

Who dances through your mind when you hear the words “belly dance?” Is it a glittering goddess or a veiled seductress? What about an alcoholic step-mother or a transsexual politician? The Kandake Dance Theatre for Social Change will present excerpts from Come Undone at Dixon Place Theatre May 16, using a fusion of folkloric and modern art forms to confront modern women’s issues with an exaggerated, absurdist and supernatural slant. At times disturbing and graphic, the dancers’ purpose is to rupture comfort zones, wake the unconscious and inspire critical thinking.

Gotham Arts Exchange presents Gotham Dance Festival at the Joyce Theater May 30-Jun 10. This year’s festival features five programs by more than ten choreographers, including a special program celebrating both established and emerging American female choreographers. Featured performers include Brian Brooks Moving Co., Jodie Gates, Peter Quanz, BodyTraffic and Gallim Dance.

Manhattan Movement & Arts Center hosts the 2nd Annual Dance Against Cancer on May 7. Enjoy an evening of cocktails and performances by dancers from the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Martha Graham Dance Company and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Featured dancers include Matthew Rushing, Maria Kowroski, Lauren Lovette, Katherine Crockett and more. All proceeds from the event will benefit the research initiatives and patient and family services funded by the American Cancer Society.
