The Very Best of NYC Dance

DANCEDance, from the Heart, Focus Dance, Camille A. Brown & Dancers

Dance from the Heart returns to New York City’s Cedar Lake Theater on Jan 23-24, featuring four performances by some of the most diverse dancers and choreographers working today. Since its inception in 2005, Dance from the Heart has become a platform for extraordinary performers to showcase their artistry and support Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares. This two-night benefit, produced by Dancers Responding to AIDS, draws a dynamic lineup of talented companies and artists performing everything from Broadway and hip-hop to contemporary ballet and modern styles. This year’s event features Misty Copeland, Melanie Moore, Kyle Abraham/ Kyle.In.Motion and more.

The Joyce Theater hosts Focus Dance, a celebration of U.S. dance featuring performances by eight companies in a repertory schedule Jan 3-8. Presented by Gotham Arts, this new annual event is the centerpiece of an initiative to promote American dance. The program includes innovative dance organizations Kate Weare Company, Monica Bill Barnes and Company, Joe Goode Performance Group, Trey McIntyre Project and Jason Samuels Smith and Company.

The Joyce Theater continues its season with Camille A. Brown & Dancers Jan 27-29. Brown is noted for mixing modern dance techniques with West African dance and hip-hop elements to produce “focused bursts of energy and frozen positions that explode into motion” (The New York Times). The performances include Brown’s dances “The Evolution of a Secured Feminine,” “The Groove to Nobody’s Business,” and “Been There, Done That.”
