Choreographers Camille A. Brown, Andrea Miller, Monica Bill Barnes and Kate Weare present two programs at the Joyce Theater Aug. 9–14. Kate Weare Company and Monica Bill Barnes & Company share an evening of dance that pairs Barnes’ charmingly rickety, beautifully tawdry, and profoundly good-hearted pieces with Weare’s wildly ferocious, startling, and highly sensuous work. Camille A. Brown, known to audiences from the work she created for Urban Bush Women and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, now comes to The Joyce with her own ensemble. Joining her is Andrea Miller, whose company, Gallim Dance, has exploded onto the national dance scene with technical virtuosity and strikingly physical works.
Immediate Medium presents the World Premiere of Doesn’t Everybody Do It In Paris?, a multi-media dance theater piece at the IRT playing through June 26. Inspired by Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, the show expands upon the classic tale of Emma Bovary’s attempts to reconcile her simple life as a country doctor’s wife with her idealized notions of romance and glamour. Doesn’t Everybody Do It In Paris? takes the story further by adding another layer, the story of Eleanor Marx Aveling, the first English translator of Madame Bovary. The fusion of these two women’s lives brings to the stage the question of what happens when human ambitions and idealized notions are interrupted by reality.
