Cirque du Soleil returns to Randall’s Island with its latest production OVO now through Jun. 6. OVO is a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects’ home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion. Don’t miss NYS’s own Michelle Matlock (The Mammy Project, Sum of Us) as Ladybug.
It took a while to have an all-lesbian burlesque staged in 21st century NYC, but HyperGender brings it to you first as they present Lesbolesque on May 22. Watch as NYC’s favorite lesbians bare it all, including self-proclaimed Queer Oprah, Bevin Branlandingham; gender blender, Goldie Peacock; the winner of GO’s nightlife award for sexiest burlesque performer in NYC, Bianca Dagga; and honorary lesbian, the legendary Rose Wood. The show runs as part of the PEARL: WOW Celebrates 30 Festival, celebrating thirty years of uncensored and independent theater at the WOW Cafe Theater.
Bowery Poetry Club hosts three of Los Angeles’ hottest comic talents in Pancake with Luna & Ginsburg Over Easy, performing for one night only on May 23. Standup comic Selene Luna (Margaret Cho’s The Sensuous Woman, My Bloody Valentine 3-D, The Cho Show) emcees. Sam Pancake (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Kitchen Confidential, Lovespring International) and Nadya Ginsburg (Adam and Steve, Frank TV) offer sketches and outrageous character monologues. Among the characters are Fritzie Tangiello, a flamboyant Broadway ex-showboy who is pursuing an unexpected new career, and a disgruntled guidette vampire from 1987.
