Logo continues its pro-social campaign beCAUSE with beCAUSE Docs, a series of documentaries addressing critical social issues. The program continues Nov 5 with the premiere of The Legacy of Brendan Burke, the story of a young athlete’s journey into advocacy. Nov 12 features the premiere of Outrage, the controversial and critically-acclaimed documentary by filmmaker Kirby Dick which uncovers closeted politicians who have built their careers off of anti-gay legislation.
Join Cinemarosa, Queens’ first and only independent film/video series, at the Queens Museum Nov 20 for a screening of Tales of the Waria. Directed by Kathy Huang, the documentary focuses on a community of transwomen called the “Waria” – Wanita (Woman) + Pria (Man) living in Makassar, Indonesia. The community has long been an accepted part of the cultural fabric. But because physical transition is frowned upon in the world’s most populous Muslim nation, they are forced to walk between worlds. In this inspiring documentary, we see how four of these women manage to do that with their heads held high.
