Don’t call us on September 17—we are going to be very busy marathoning all of the extremely sapphic Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story.
The Monster series, the latest in the hugely popular Netflix original series from Ryan Murphy, this time explores the notorious story of Lizzie Borden, who was accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe in the 1890s.
This story has been adapted many times over the years, including the very queer retelling Lizzie, starring Kristen Stewart and Chloë Sevigny, in 2018, and the much less queer Lifetime series The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, starring Christina Ricci, in 2015.
This time around, queerness is once again central to the story. In Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, Ella Beatty stars as Lizzie, and Vicky Krieps steps into the role of her maid, Bridget “Maggie” Sullivan. In this adaptation, Lizzie is the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family (played by Charlie Hunnam and Rebecca Hall) who finds a kindred spirit in her maid, as they find themselves “trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty.” To cope, “they escape into a fantasy of sex, power, and revenge.”
In reality, the case would go on to grip the nation and reshape the way society viewed who a killer could be. The series seems to be tackling this idea as well, taking a sympathetic view of a young woman who refused to be forced into the cage of what society would allow for her—and became a legend, if a very notorious one.
