‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ Canceled After Three Seasons

HBO Max announced the series would not be renewed for a fourth season. But, all hope may not be lost.
The Mindy Kaling co-created comedy-drama The Sex Lives of College Girls has been canceled at HBO Max. The series ended its third season earlier this year free of a cliffhanger, leaving some fans speculating that producers were preparing for the end. For some, the cancellation was a long time coming. For others, it was a tragic death of a beloved series with queer characters and storylines.

In the series’ third season, pop star Reneé Rapp departed from the show. Her character, Leighton Murrary, left the series midway through season three after transferring to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in pursuit of a more rigorous math program. Following her departure, fans began tuning out of the show, noting it to not be the same without her. One fan took to X and wrote, “Doomed since my math whiz, lesbian, snobby icon left.”
Despite the predictable cancellation, fans were still disheartened to see it get scrapped and had a lot to say on social media. “I mean it def went downhill a bit this past season but come on, we just learned that [B]ela is bi and we don’t get to continue to explore that? Rude, honestly,” wrote one fan. “And just when Bela was discovering her bisexuality,” another wrote.
The Sex Lives of College Girls joined the list of LGBTQ+ TV series on the chopping block in recent years. Our Flag Means Death, Glamorous, Willow, and The L Word: Generation Q are some of the many queer TV shows that have been removed from streaming services like HBO Max, Netflix, and Disney+.
Max’s decision may not be the end of the series. Series co-creator Justin Noble shared a lengthy Instagram post on Tuesday, teasing the possibility of the beloved show finding another home.

“We are currently in discussions with some new potential homes for the show, and it’s nice that there is so much interest,” said Noble. “But regardless of what happens, I’m proud of this show and the work that so many incredibly talented people put into it.”
As we await word on the series’ potential continuation, one fan left us with some wise parting words on X, “Everyone check in on your lesbian friends.”
