The Emmy Awards Have Never Been More Queer

Nominations were unveiled Wednesday, and the list is jam packed with queer excellence.

Move over straights – it’s a big year for LGBTQ+ actors and projects at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Nominations were unveiled Wednesday by Abbott Elementary‘s Sheryl Lee Ralph and Veep‘s Tony Hale, and the list is jam packed with queer excellence.

Top Chef‘s Kristen Kish, who was featured in GO‘s “100 Women We Love” this year, has been nominated for Outstanding Host for a Reality Program.

To no one’s surprise, Rupaul also received a nomination for Outstanding Host for a Reality Program. The drag star has already won eight times in a row, meaning he holds the record for most awarded host in Emmy history. This year, Rupaul’s Drag Race was also nominated for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program and Reality Competition Program.

The Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category is filled to the brim with queer stars. Four out of five nominees are a part of the community: Andrew Scott (Ripley), Matt Bomer (Fellow Travelers), Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer), Tom Hollander (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans).

Along with Gadd’s nomination, the cast of Baby Reindeer are in the running for seven awards this year. Nava Mau, who plays Teri, made history this year as the first trans actress to be nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Jessica Gunning (Martha) was also nominated in the same category.

Hacks, Max’s powerful lesbian comedy, landed six nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series. Co-leads Hannah Einbinder and Jean Smart were nominated for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, respectively.

Additional queer actors we’re rooting for include: Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Lily Gladstone (Under the Bridge), Holland Taylor (The Morning Show), Sarah Paulson (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live), Steve Martin (Only Murders In The Building), Jonathan Bailey (Fellow Travelers), and more.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards premiere on September 15 on ABC.
